Will I make money that day or will I lose more than I walked in with?” Because of the high house fees, I have often worked an 8-12 hour shift and left the club with less than minimum wage or even ‘in the hole’ because I now owe the club back rent. It’s exploitation of desperate women and it’s unreasonable. In the L&I report, one anonymous dancer said: “The worst part about this job in Washington is the astronomically high house fees. “The club can take 10 percent to 60 percent in one night. The dancer has to pay the club for the stopped payment, Lexy said. The dancers spoke of one customer who paid for a private room with a credit or debit card, then stopped payment on the card saying they were unhappy with the performance. One club charges a dancer $20 every time she steps outdoors, she said. In some cases, if a dancer chooses to work fewer shifts a week, the club will increase her house fees for each shift. If the dancer does not, she has to pay the difference to the club, Zack-Wu said. Spokane’s Deja Vu also demands that dancers sell a specific number of drinks every night. A photo of the private-room rates at one Washington club show the establishment taking $75 of a $200 fee for 15 minutes, $120 of a $360 fee for a half hour, and $150 of a $500 fee for an hour. Zack-Wu was campaign manager for the effort.Įvery time a dancer takes a customer to a private room, the club takes a cut of what the dancer earns there, they said. Two interviewed dancers – Madison Zack-Wu and Lexy, who did not want her last name used – are point people for a Seattle-based dancers association, Strippers Are Workers, which is pushing for SB 5614. Three dancers who talked to Crosscut strongly disagreed with Forbes’ characterization, and their information was reinforced in the L&I report, which included input from eight anonymous dancers. Tips that dancers pay to security people, DJs and servers are strictly voluntary, he said. In a brief interview, Forbes, nephew of longtime, now-retired Seattle strip-club mogul Roger Forbes, said his clubs charge dancers basic house fees - and nothing else. A November 2020 Washington Department of Labor & Industries report said these “house fees” can range from $65 to $165 a shift, with the average fee being greater than $100. Instead, the dancer pays the club to be allowed to dance in it. That means a club does not pay them to dance. The 11 clubs in Washington cannot make money from selling alcohol, so they pile fees on their dancers to make a profit.Īlmost all exotic dancers are independent contractors, not employees of the clubs. Oregon allows the sale of liquor, which has led to a thriving exotic-dancing industry in Portland.Īlcohol sales are a huge revenue source for the Portland clubs. Washington is one of a few states that do not allow liquor to be sold in strip clubs. “This bill would significantly change the relationship between the dancers and the establishments,” Forbes told the Senate Labor & Commerce Committee at a Feb. The key proposed change would allow liquor to be sold at strip clubs, which Saldana, three interviewed dancers, and Eric Forbes, owner of seven Puget Sound-area and two Portland-area strip clubs including Deja Vu and Dream Girls, say would drastically change this scene’s financial dynamics. Saldana introduced Senate Bill 5614 to change that, as well as to upgrade safety measures and guard against unfair terminations of their contracts. “The whole business model is based on the backs of the dancers,” said Sen. Washington’s exotic dancers work under a brutal, chaotic economic model that the state Legislature is thinking about changing. After a round of dances on stage, one man opted for a private-room performance. The game is played across four phases: Drafting, Venting, Racing and Damage. The track itself features squares of hazardous terrain that will damage your vehicle, bonus spaces that allow you to swap 'cogs' for dice (more later), and can be further modified by other players during the game. The aim of the game is to be the first inventor to clank across the finish line (at which point a final round takes place). The track tiles are satisfyingly chunky and three of the available five are selected, choosing between the Alps or Hoverdrome side, and then the start and finish tiles are added forming a five-tile track. Once players have selected their inventor, they will then take the cockpit and machine part cards for their racing machine and the pawn which will represent them on the track. Steampunk Rally actually makes perfect sense and plays very smoothly and quickly. Now, that may paint a picture of the game as being cumbersome and over-complicated, however, far from it. In fact, the only major mechanism it misses is probably area control, but I'm sure I've just missed how it does that too. However, as well as being a racing game, it is also an engine builder (literally), card drafting, deck building, dice chucking, worker placement game. Players will portray the aforementioned inventors who will build ever more elaborate contraptions, gather upgrades, weapons and generally ludicrous devices that will either help you, or hinder your opponents. Don't panic however, in Steampunk Rally, if there's a mechanism you're not keen on, just wait till the next phase, another one will be along very soon.Īt its heart, Steampunk Rally is a racing game. I always like to start a game's description with an idea of what you'll be doing in a game as I think it's often handy and gives players a sense of mechanisms they may or may not enjoy. If you've ever wondered in the long sleepless hours of insomnia " Who would build the best racing car: Nicola Tesla or Albert Einstein?" then Steampunk Rally may well be the game for you, because far from the ingenious imaginations of just these two intellectual titans, you actually get to choose from 16 great inventors of the industrial revolution ( some of whom will have you leaping to Wikipedia for more info). Rebirth addresses the origins of the supernatural objects from the previous installment. Tasi’s story arc comes full circle, but as far as the events in The Dark Descent goes it was difficult to parse how the original game fits into the overarching narrative. But the finer details in the story are easily lost in the mad-dash towards safety that Rebirth encourages at every moment. You’ll never miss out on any major revelations, however, because Tasi talks through everything that comes to light during the 10-hour adventure. In signature Frictional fashion, details about Rebirth’s plot are sprinkled across the game’s environments in notes and slabs. The story that ties Rebirth together is equally traumatic and hopeful. The second mechanic was a bit more fleshed out but still suffered from the same issues.Ī mysterious amulet Tasi wakes up with is presented as a game-changing new mechanic early in 'Rebirth,' but it doesn't live up to the hype. The amulet acts as Tasi’s ticket to an alternate dimension that unfortunately has very few uses compared to how game-changing it seems early in the game. Both, particularly the amulet, are presented as major tools for Tasi, but they never feel fully realized The second is a Death Stranding-inspired feature that can’t be described without spoiling a major part of the plot. One is a supernatural amulet that Tasi wakes up with when the game begins. Two significant new mechanics in Rebirth set it apart from The Dark Descent. This cycle is kept fresh by a wide variety of puzzle archetypes for each of the game’s stages that only slightly stale towards the end of the game. Most of the Rebirth’s puzzles rely on this satisfying epiphany moment where players understand the end goal and set off to complete their terrifying task. Players will need to hunt for clues as they try to solve 'Rebirth's many puzzles. Players must constantly juggle their supply of matches and lantern oil to illuminate their surroundings and avoid slipping into madness. This increases the likelihood of seeing the ghoulish, human husks that stalk Rebirth’s levels. Like previous Amnesia titles, the longer you stay in darkness, the more panicked you become. Every new area and puzzle made me internally squeal “NOPE,” but I pressed on anyway because of Frictional’s masterful resource management system. Throughout the roughly 10-hour plot, Rebirth beckons you into pitch-black hallways and dilapidated crypts with a slim hope of understanding what brought Tasi here. Rebirth is an insanity simulator in essence. But the title never fully lives up to the new mechanics and features it introduces early on. Ultimately, Rebirth refines all of The Dark Descent's most frustrating parts, making Frictional’s new release nothing short of high octane nightmare fuel. 'Rebirth' will make you shudder every time you turn a corner. Plus, The Dark Descents’ signature Sanity gauge has been changed into a veiny aura that slowly obscures Tasi’s vision the longer she stays in darkness. The fleshy, zombie-like Gatherers from the original have been replaced by Ghouls that look a lot like the Husks in Mass Effect, minus the cybernetics. Rebirth puts gamers in the shoes of a new female protagonist, anthropologist Tasi Trianon, who is stranded in an Algerian desert after losing her memory and her colleagues in an accident.įrictional has looked past Amnesia’s traditionally gothic aesthetic and brought to life a spooky, Tomb Raider-esque world that intrigues as much as it horrifies. A direct sequel set 90 years after the fiendish events that unfolded at Brennenburg Castle. The original made the Swedish studio the undisputed indie survival horror kings.
